LAKEWOOD-, CALIF. - The city celebrated Cinco de Mayo on Wednesday by cleaning up at least three illegal dumpsites.
The Lakewood Populist had reported on rampant illegal dumping in a tiny section of east Lakewood near the Pioneer and Del Amo boulevards. The three worst sites--two on 207th Street and one at the corner of 206th Street and Pioneer Boulevard--were cleaned up by city staff.
A city truck at around 3:30 p.m. was seen hauling off the debris, a couch and bookshelves, that criminals had illegally dumped in front of vacant lots in the area. The Lakewood Populist is trying to determine who owns and is responsible for the vacant lots. Property owners are responsible for the maintenance of the public easements in front of their property.
A large collection of furniture reported by a resident as illegally dumped behind a house in an alleyway near Elaine Avenue and Centralia Street was also cleaned up. However, it was unclear who was responsible for the clean up as other furniture was laying nearby.
The refuse from an illegal dumpsite near 205th Street and Pioneer Boulevard in an alleyway was also still there.
